Iowa Facts

Based in Wichita, Kan., Koch Industries, Inc. is one of the largest private companies in America according to Forbes magazine. It owns a diverse group of companies involved in refining and chemicals; process and pollution control equipment and technologies; minerals; fertilizers; polymers and fibers; commodity trading and services; and forest and consumer products. Koch companies have a presence in nearly 60 countries and employ about 70,000 people.

Companies in Iowa

Flint Hills Resources, LLC, through its subsidiaries, is a leading refining and chemicals company. It markets products such as gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, olefins, polymers and intermediate chemicals. From its Minnesota refinery, the company distributes refined fuel through its strategically located pipeline and terminals, including one in Bettendorf. The company also operates three asphalt plants in Iowa: Algona, Davenport and Dubuque. The plants provide road construction departments and contractors with liquid asphalt.

Koch Pipeline Company, L.P. owns and operates the Wood River Pipeline, a portion of which crosses Iowa. The pipeline originates in Illinois and then moves through northern Missouri, before continuing through central Iowa. The pipeline transports crude oil to refineries in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area. This pipeline is a part of the nearly 4,000 miles of pipelines owned or operated by Koch Pipeline Company.

Georgia-Pacific companies have facilities in Dubuque, Fort Dodge and Monticello that manufacture corrugated containers and gypsum panels for residential and commercial construction. Georgia-Pacific LLC, based in Atlanta, and its subsidiaries have approximately 300 manufacturing facilities across North America, South America and Europe, ranging from large pulp, paper and tissue operations to gypsum plants, box plants and building products operations.

Koch Nitrogen Company, LLC owns and operates fertilizer terminals in Fort Madison, Marshalltown, Washington, Garner and Sergeant Bluff. The company also operates a fertilizer plant in Fort Dodge. The company and its affiliates have the capability to manufacture, market and distribute more than 10 million metric tons of fertilizer products annually.

  • Flint Hills Resources’ terminals in Iowa were among those recognized with the Platinum Safety Award from the International Liquid Terminals Association. The award recognizes member companies that have a strong commitment to continuous safety improvement.
  • Georgia-Pacific’s Monticello plant received STAR certification in the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s Voluntary Protection Programs for its outstanding performance.
  • Koch Pipeline Company, L.P. was named one of America’s Safest Companies by EHS Today magazine in 2008. The company has earned the Occupational Safety Award from the American Petroleum Institute, its highest honor, and the Occupational Industry Leader Award from the National Safety Council. The Southern Operations Group has earned OSHA VPP STAR status, only the fourth pipeline group to do so. KPL employees have worked more than 6.3 million hours without a lost-time incident.
  • Koch Nitrogen Company has earned the Stewardship Award for safe shipping from Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway Company for three consecutive years. It has also earned the Safe Handling Award from the Canadian National Railway Company.

Community Commitment

Koch companies are committed to understanding the needs of the community and participating in projects and activities that add value to their neighbors. Here are some examples:

  • A Koch Nitrogen Company challenge grant will fund the purchase of a washer/extractor and dryer to clean the Fort Dodge Fire Department’s protective gear. The $10,600 challenge grant includes $5,000 from Koch Nitrogen and $5,600 raised by the City of Fort Dodge.
  • Through the Georgia-Pacific Foundation, the company partners with many local and statewide organizations to improve the quality of life in communities where GP employees live and work. The GP Foundation focuses support in four key areas: education, enrichment of community, environment and entrepreneurship.
  • Koch Nitrogen Company contributed $2,500 for the Webster County Soil and Water Conservation District’s Brushy Creek Project.
