Environment, Health & Safety Facts

Koch Industries believes that businesses must strive for continuous improvement in their safety and environmental performance to be competitive in today’s global markets. Koch companies strive for 10,000 percent compliance, with 100 percent of employees fully complying 100 percent of the time. Koch companies have a vision of operational excellence, including principles of operation that demand safe, environmentally responsible decisions and actions. This commitment to a superior standard is visible in how the companies operate facilities and manufacture products.

Commitment to the environment

Koch Industries’ Market-Based Management® business philosophy encourages employees to think like owners – an approach that has translated into a firm commitment to environmental stewardship. By employing MBM®, Koch companies create long-term value for society by using resources more efficiently; protecting the environment and the safety and health of our workers and others. Employees strive to continuously improve operations to increase efficiency and reduce energy and water use, emissions and other waste.

Flint Hills Resources has emphasized refinery flaring reduction, which earned the company a Clean Air Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. In addition, overall refinery operations criteria air emissions per barrel were 60 percent lower than the industry average of the 50 largest refineries in the United States, based on the most recent publicly available data.

Koch Industries' global headquarters in Wichita, Kan., earned the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's prestigious Energy Star award, the national symbol for superior energy efficiency and environmental protection. It is the only Wichita office building to earn the honor and one of only five Energy Star-rated buildings in Kansas.

By participating in reclamation and recycling programs, Koch companies help reduce the amount of waste accumulation in landfills. Products such as carpet, gypsum wallboard, paper, plastic and metal are reclaimed and used to make new products. For example, carpet reclaimed through INVISTA’s Antron Reclamation Program™ can be made into filtration devices, automotive parts, packaging materials and many other useful products. Since 2001, the center has reclaimed more than 85 million pounds of carpet, which equates to 425,000 cubic yards of landfill space.

Georgia-Pacific's Broadway mill in Green Bay, Wis., has implemented a new state-of-the-art paper recycling system that will reduce water use by up to 1 million gallons per day and keep approximately 50 tons of solid waste from landfills. The mill uses more than 400,000 tons of the recycled wastepaper per year to produce branded tissue products such Soft N' Gentle® and So-Dri®.

The Standard: Safety and health excellence

The commitment to build an employee-centered safety culture is seen at Koch company facilities around the world. These efforts have been recognized by numerous industry and government awards.

INVISTA has entered into a “strategic partnership” with the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration to share knowledge and further strengthen the health and safety management systems at seven INVISTA company sites in the U.S. Five other Koch companies concluded a similar partnership in March 2009, which focused on the benefit/improvement of health and safety management systems, OSHA VPP participation and improving ergonomic performance. The partnership was considered a success by both OSHA and the Koch companies involved and resulted in a reduction in incident rates and significant improvements in all focus areas of the partnership.

With more than 100 STAR sites in OSHA’s Voluntary Protection Programs, Koch companies rank third in the U.S. behind General Electric and the United States Postal Service. Georgia-Pacific was named a VPP Corporate Pilot company in 2004, the first corporation to achieve this designation. In addition, Koch Aviation and four of Flint Hills Resources' Texas fuels terminals were the first in their industries to achieve VPP STAR status.

Community Commitment

Koch companies are committed to understanding the needs of the community and participating in projects and activities that add value to their neighbors. Those projects include participation in educational, environmental stewardship and human services projects and organizations.

Koch companies work to preserve and maintain wildlife habitat on their properties, with 10 sites receiving Wildlife Habitat Council certification. Several of these are certified as Corporate Lands for Learning™ sites by WHC. The CLL certification recognizes a commitment to environmental education programs.

With the Victoria Independent School District, INVISTA sponsors the Wetland Environmental Science Education Encounter program. WE SEE provides environmental education in an outdoor classroom located on a 53-acre constructed wetland; more than 35,000 students have participated since 1998. The wetland also helps return fresh water to the Guadalupe River. The school district received the Environmental Excellence Award from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality for the environmental studies curriculum.

Each year, Koch companies sponsor and employees donate time to local habitat restoration and preservation, and cleanup efforts across the U.S.

Flint Hills Resources has been working with Friends of the Mississippi River, Great River Greening and several civic agencies to restore the Pine Bend Bluffs Natural Area to its natural state. Volunteers work to eliminate invasive plants from overtaking the area's natural landscape and to reclaim important habitat for the Mississippi River migratory bird flyway - host to 40 percent of North American waterfowl and millions of migratory songbirds. The project has been recognized with the Minnesota Environmental Initiative Award for Natural Resource Protection.

In recognition of this commitment to environmental stewardship, Keep America Beautiful honored Koch with the 2005 Vision for America Award – its most prestigious commendation for environmental stewardship and corporate citizenship.
