Charles Koch's explanation for KII's success is the strategy he calls market-based management, or MBM. The basic premise is to apply the principles of a free and prosperous society at the level of a firm. There are several elements to MBM, but the basic keys are an understanding of how value is created and humility about the source and nature of knowledge.
